Data & 3D is an action that can be accessed from the project dashboard or via the sidebar menu on the left when you are in a single project. 

Grid filter

In order to enter the data and 3D you can either

• Select a Bookmark
• Set up a new manual filter

Layout

Data & 3D consists of two main parts, to the left is the data grid view. For more information about this part take a look here 🔗. The right part is the 3D view where you can see your model & objects and is the main focus for this article.

 

When using the filtering function or selecting the objects in the grid these objects will also be marked in the 3D-model. 

 

Using the 3D viewer

Navigation

• To rotate, left click, hold and use the mouse to rotate around the position you clicked as the center point
• To move vertically or horizontally, right click, hold and use the mouse
• Use scroll to zoom

You can right click in the 3D viewer to get up a context menu. This menu will let you hide, isolate, make objects transparent or show everything.

Measure

You can measure in the 3D viewer from point to point.

Click on the Measure Tool and add a new measurement. You are then prompted to select two points where the different distances between those points are shown.

Sectioning

The Section Plane tool allows you to slice the model from any angle. You can add multiple planes, and after clicking the Add new plane-button you just click any object in the viewer where the plane will be created. You can then move and rotate the gizmo to adjust the plane. You can hide and show the section planes you want to see.

Room

Rooms or spaces are objects not typically shown in the 3D viewer. You can choose to show them by pressing the Show Room button. This will show the rooms in a transparent red color.

Clicking these will select the room/space if you are in a Room-Grid (Object type) or you can right click to select View Instance Detail which will always show the Object Detail of the object selected given that it has been synced data for it.

Selection

Selecting objects can be done either from the grid or you can use the 3D view. Objects will be selected if you left-click on them. They will be highlighted when they are selected.

If you have a need to spatially select objects there are a few alternatives that the 3D viewer offer.

Either you can select by parent or sibiling. Parents could be the wall object when you select a window and Sibilings would be all windows, doors etc. in that same wall.

Another way is to use spatial context to select other objects by. Whenever you select objects in the 3D viewer it will show the bounding-box in a yellow color. If you select multiple objects (hold down the CTRL button while you click on the other objects) the bounding-box will be for all those objects. This can be utilized to select every object within a room or bound by walls in a section of the building.

Selecting Contained objects will keep the selected objects (green highlight) and the contained object (yellow highlight) since they are fully contained within the outer yellow lines. By choosing Intersecting all objects partially or fully contained will be selected. Also here you will be able to see what objects that will be selected if you hover over the selection choice.

Save views

It is possible to save 3D views to later revisit them at a later time. Views can either be Public or Private meaning you can let other project participants use the same views as you or you can keep them for yourself.

In these saved 3D views the following will be stored

• Camera position
• Object visibility (Hidden, Transparent or Isolation)
• Measurements
• Section planes
• Show/hide Room

Coloring

Model objects in the 3D view can be colored by the values of a parameter.

Above the 3D viewer to the right you can search and select a parameter of your choice to color objects by. If you click on the icon on the right side you will open the color legend. This shows what value each color represent. This works best for colors that are in good contrast to eachother so if you have a lot of values the colors can be a bit similar to eachother. In the legend you can also select all objects of one color when you hover over the color/value.

Can't find your parameter?

To make a Parameter available to color by it needs to be either a value type equal to Lookup or have the "Store value list" setting turned on. 

Settings

Under settings you will find a few options to customize your experience with the 3D viewer.

The displayed measurement can be changed to another unit. Highlights can be added when you hover over objects in the 3D viewer. The navigation cube can be turned on to easier rotate the model. Color of the background can also be changed from the default color in these settings.

 

Troubleshooting 3D

 

Problem	Solution
Model is not showing in the 3D view	Make sure that you have 3D geometry synced for that model
Nothing is displayed when I select multiple models that has 3D synced	If your models are not localized together it can happen that the 3D viewer will zoom so far out to fit those models all into the view that you cannot see anything. To check if this is the problem you can go to an object in the grid and right-click to Zoom in on this object If you can now see your model & object at least one of your models are not correctly localized. Please contact support for addition help with this problem.
