Brief Summary:
1. Entries update automatically – you never need to press "refresh."
2. The map works both online and offline, but some features require internet access.
3. Offline maps must be set up by an administrator in advance – see the separate administrator guide.
This guide explains how the Capture app behaves when you open it, switch back to it, or navigate within it – and what you can do whether you are online or offline.
You will get an introduction to the following:
1.0 The app updates automatically
2.0 When you return to the app (from background to foreground)
3.0 When you open the app again (after it has been fully closed)
4.0 When you go back from a list or detail page
5.0 Maps - capabilities and limitations
5.1 Online maps – available features
5.2 Offline maps – what works without internet
5.3 Limitations – what requires internet
5.4 Norway maps and road reference – for road projects
6.0 Summary – what you need to remember?
1.0 The app updates automatically
The goal is that you always see updated information (entries) on the home screen.
Each time the Workspace (3D view or camera) in the Capture app becomes active or is displayed on your device, the app will automatically:
- Check for new or changed entries.
- Update the 3D view / map so that all new entries with locations are also shown.
This happens without you needing to press a separate "refresh" button. The app updates in these situations:
- When you move from background to foreground (i.e., if you come from another app back to Capture without it having been fully closed).
- When you open the app again after it has been closed.
- When you switch projects or workspaces.
- When you go back from a list or detail page to the home screen.
The situations are explained a bit more below. These only describe how the app fetches new entries or changes in existing entries.
Note: Automatic synchronization of entries happens automatically. If you want to perform a full update of the app – including project setup, template configuration, and updated models/drawings – you must press Synchronize in the side menu. This is designed so the app stays fast and prioritizes the changes the user is actively working with. Full synchronization can also be done at a convenient time, not when you need it least.
2.0 When you return to the app (from background to foreground)
Situation: You have been using the Capture app but then switch to another app or lock your phone. Then Capture goes into "background." When you open Capture again later:
- When the workspace is shown, the app will automatically update the entries. You will thus see any new or changed entries.
You don’t need to do anything yourself – the update happens automatically when you return to the app.
3.0 When you open the app again (after it has been fully closed)
Situation:
- You have fully closed the Capture app, or
- The phone has closed the app automatically (for example, to save battery/memory), and you open Capture again from the home screen or app list.
When you open Capture again:
- The app restarts, and when the workspace is shown, it will automatically fetch and display the latest entries. This is a full update of the content to ensure all available new information is ready for use.
Here too, the update happens automatically when the app appears on the workspace.
4.0 When you go back from a list or detail page
Situation: You have opened an entry or a list of entries, for example:
- You are viewing details for a single entry opened from the 3D model.
- You leave the list of entries and go back to the workspace.
- You have made changes, saved, or just viewed information.
When you press the "Back" button and return to the workspace:
- The app will automatically update the entries on the workspace.
- Any changes you have made, or new entries, will be included in the overview.
5.0 Maps
The map in Capture lets you navigate to locations in the field, place entries precisely, and find existing entries. Here is an overview of what you can do – and what requires an internet connection.
5.1 Online maps – available features
When you have internet access, all map functions work:
- GPS and position display.
- Address search.
- Base maps (OpenStreetMap globally, Norwegian Mapping Authority’s map data for Norway).
- Distance measurement.
- Automatic coordinate and address when placing entries.
- Real-time synchronization of entries.
5.2 Offline maps – what works without internet
The map in the Capture app is designed to work in the field, even without coverage. All three core functions – Navigate, Place, and Find – work without internet access.
When you are offline:
- GPS and position display work as normal.
- You can place entries, take photos, and fill out information.
- Locations, photos, and metadata are stored locally on the device and sent automatically to Interaxo when you are back online.
- Existing entries and offline maps are available as usual.
Note: The offline map must be set up by an administrator in advance. Without this, you will not have base maps available offline. See the administrator guide for offline maps for more information.
5.3 Limitations – what requires internet
Some features are only available when you are online:
-
Address search – Searching for an address on the map requires an internet connection. Already placed entries still show their address offline.
- Norway maps and road reference (NVDB) – These are special features for road projects and always require internet access. See more below.
5.4 Norway maps and road reference – for road projects
For projects within road and infrastructure, it is possible to activate an additional map type:
Norway map – The Norwegian Mapping Authority’s Norway map becomes available as an extra base map alongside the standard map.
Automatic road reference (NVDB) – When you place an entry, the app automatically fetches the nearest road from the National Road Database (NVDB) and displays the road reference on the entry. This makes it easy to document the exact location along a road without manually looking up the road reference.
Important limitations for these features:
- The map requires internet access – they do not work offline because fetching the road reference needs map search.
- They are only available in Norway.
- They are not standard delivery. Each customer must request to have this activated for their projects. Contact your project administrator or Interaxo if you want this.
6.0 Summary – what do you need to remember?
General synchronization
- Entries update automatically every time you view the workspace – you don’t need to do anything yourself.
- You do not need to press a "refresh" button or close and reopen the app to get the latest version.
- For a full update of project setup, template configuration, and models: press Synchronize in the side menu.
3D viewer
- The 3D viewer updates automatically and shows new entries with locations every time the workspace becomes active.
- This happens when you return to the app, open it again, switch projects, or go back from a list or detail page.
Maps
- Navigate, Place, and Find work both with and without internet access.
- Address search requires internet – already placed entries still show their address offline.
- Offline maps must be set up by an administrator in advance. Without this, you will not have base maps available without coverage.
- Norway maps and NVDB road reference require internet, are only available in Norway, and must be activated per project – they are not enabled by default.
